TOURETTE TEXAS NEEDS YOUR HELP!

We can achieve our mission of direct assistance to families ONLY with your generous support.

If each family we have served sent just $5.00 each – we would double our annual service budget – thereby doubling our ability to provide help to those in need.

Dear Families and Friends of Tourette Texas:

One of my very favorite holidays is Thanksgiving – and it is just around the corner!

I love the days of preparation, the hours of cooking, the wonderful smells of freshly baked pies …. but most importantly, I love the gathering of family and friends in Faith and with Thanks for all the blessings bestowed upon us.

Living with Tourette’s syndrome, it is sometimes very difficult to count your blessings. But remember: many diagnosed with TS in childhood will improve symptomatically – sometimes dramatically – as they move from adolescence into young adulthood. Light at the end of the tunnel! Something to be thankful for!

Did you know that one of the most important determinates for a productive adulthood for kiddos diagnosed with TS is achieving as much normalcy as possible in childhood and adolescence??

Thus, as a parent, your guidance and support change outcomes! Something to be thankful for!

But, how do parents help youngsters with Tourette’s keep self-esteem intact and continue to make academic progress in spite of roadblocks caused by motor and vocal tics, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)?

The Tourette Association of America Texas Chapter has many programs and services – all free of charge – to help ensure every child and adult living with TS have the tools and support necessary to diminish the impact and (hopefully) have a happy and productive life. Parents don’t have to reinvent the wheel! Something to be thankful for!

As I give thanks and count my blessings this holiday season, I hope that you, your family, and your loved ones will also greatly enjoy the holidays with many blessings and much joy.

Love and hugs,

Sheryl

Helping Children & Adults Change Their Lives

Tourette is a chronic neurobehavioral movement disorder that begins in childhood. Those affected make motor movements and vocalizations they cannot control. Additionally, many have associated obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dysgraphia and other issues.

Today's estimates indicate that 1 out of every 160 children between the ages of 5-17 in the US has TS and that 1 out of every 100 children has TS or another Tic Disorder. Of note, boys are 3-4 times more likely to have TS than girls and 86% of those with Tourette also have a co-occurring condition such as ADHD, OCD or anxiety. In spite of its high incidence, Tourette continues to be greatly misunderstood. Although medication may help control the symptoms, as of yet there is no cure.

Tourette Texas, one of the largest Chapters of the Tourette Association of America, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We directly assist Texas area families and children in crisis, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

EDUCATIONAL/BACK TO SCHOOL MEETING WITH SHERYL KADMON, TOURETTE TEXAS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.

Back to SCHOOL often equals Back to STRESS for children with Tourette’s, their parents and their teachers.  To the uninformed, symptoms of Tourette’s often seem purposefully disruptive and “disobedient” to teachers.  Additionally, tics and associated disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and/or learning disabilities often keep a child from performing to full potential.

Sheryl Kadmon, Executive Director of the Tourette Syndrome Association of Texas, can help you and others understand this often baffling disorder and help you advocate successfully for your child in school.  Learn diagnostic criteria for T.S.; categories and phenomenology of tics; associated disorders, such as OCD and ADHD; pharmacologic and other interventions; educational and social implications of the syndrome; accommodations and modifications for the classroom; and how to help prepare your children and yourself for maximum success in life.

These free presentations are perfect for parents, adults with T.S., family, physicians, nurses, school personnel and teachers – anyone with an interest in learning about T.S.

You MUST RSVP to info@TouretteTexas.org or TouretteTexas@aol.com. Mention YOUR CITY NAME in the email, as we have other groups across the state also holding meetings.
