Join us on August 5th for our annual “Back to School Preparation” meeting. Tourette Texas Executive Director Sheryl Kadmon will help you organize and provide information for your child’s teachers in order to make the school year a success for everyone.

This group is a safe, supportive space for children, adolescents, and adults with Tourette Syndrome as well as parents to connect, share experiences, and support one another. We will continue with the same format, with children and adolescents with TS, siblings, and children in one room and with adults in the other room. We do have room for expansion, if we need to break out into two groups. We will continue to provide a pizza dinner.

The above support group leaders and individuals have agreed to accept telephone calls concerning Tourette’s syndrome. Although all phone volunteers are well versed in TS, their comments reflect their personal background with TS and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Chapter. About Tourette’s Syndrome

Tourette’s syndrome is a neurobehavioral (brain-based) movement disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Beginning in childhood, it causes those affected to make movements and noises they cannot control. Additionally, many with T.S. also have associated disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder and/or learning problems. Although medication may help control the symptoms, as of yet there is no cure. Tourette Association of America – Texas Chapter, one of the largest Tourette Association of America Chapters in the country, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We raise funds to directly assist Texas area families and children in crisis, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Tourette Association of America – Texas Chapter supports the medical, educational and social needs of Texans with Tourette’s syndrome and their families. Our programs and services include professional counseling; a unique Medical Assistance Program; an annual children’s Camp du Ballon Rouge weekend; educational programs and In-Service presentations; scholarships and direct client services; Support Groups; Youth Ambassador Program; and family events and activities, all of which are free of charge to our families.

Private tennis lessons are free for children and families living with TS.
Tennis can be an excellent sport for individuals with Tourette Syndrome. Using tennis to
help children with TS involves leveraging the physical, mental, and social benefits of the
sport to enhance their overall well-being.

1. Physical Activity
Engaging in physical exercise can help reduce the severity of tics in some individuals.
The physical exertion and focus required in tennis can act as a form of distraction,
potentially leading to fewer or less severe tics.

2. Skill Development
Tennis helps improve coordination, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which
can be beneficial for individuals with Tourette’s who might struggle with motor control.

3. Focus and concentration
The sport demands a high level of concentration and strategic
thinking. This intense focus can sometimes help manage tics by redirecting mental
energy towards the game. Teaching children techniques to stay focused can also help
them manage their symptoms in other areas of life.

4. Routine and structure
The structured environment of tennis practice and matches can
provide a sense of routine and stability, which can be comforting and beneficial for
individuals with Tourette’s.

5. Social interaction
Engaging in physical exercise can help reduce the severity of tics in some individuals.
The physical exertion and focus required in tennis can act as a form of distraction,
potentially leading to fewer or less severe tics.

6. Stress Relief
Physical activity, including tennis, is known to reduce stress and anxiety, which are often
associated with an increase in tic severity.

7. Individual Pace

Tennis can be played at various levels of intensity and can be adjusted to suit the needs
and abilities of the individual, allowing them to progress at their own pace.

8. Positive Reinforcement
Celebrating achievements and progress in tennis can boost self-
esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment. Positive reinforcement from coaches
and
peers helps children build confidence and resilience.

9. Adaptable play
Tennis can be played at various levels of intensity and can be adjusted to suit the needs
and abilities of the individual, allowing them to progress at their own pace.

10. Therapeutic environment
Creating a safe and supportive environment on the tennis
court, where children feel comfortable expressing themselves and receiving
encouragement, can enhance their overall well-being.
